It gets you with a flightless dinosaur and a kid who fails at everything, and then it makes you cry about both. Kyu and Myu hatch as a species that shouldn't exist, and the whole movie becomes Nobita, the boy who can't do a single thing right, coaching a creature who can't do the one thing his body was built for. The art is the cleanest this franchise has looked in years, the Mr.Children theme lands exactly where it should, and the Cretaceous set pieces have real Jurassic Park scale for something aimed at kids. Yes, the CG dinosaurs sit awkwardly against the hand-drawn world, and nobody here has hidden depths. That's not the point.
