You come in for a gag reel and leave weirdly attached to a man in a changshan who has been failing upward since 1962. This is the fourth Old Master Q feature, and it does not reinvent the trio: Old Man Q still walks in with that single hair and infinite confidence, Big Potato is still round, hungry and one step behind, Mr. Chin is still the straight man absorbing damage nobody asked him to absorb. After the last film sent them through a lunapark, an extortionist landlord with a bomb, and an alien houseguest, a detective caper for hire is exactly the right size of ridiculous. Alfonso Wong's comics were wordless four-panel sight gags, and the timing here still runs on that logic: setup, escalation, Old Man Q eating the consequence. Rubbery, cheap-feeling, sincere. The kind of slapstick that survives because someone's dad kept the comics.
