Evangelion doesn't put you in the cockpit, it puts you in Shinji's chest cavity and makes you sit there while he chants "I mustn't run away" and runs away anyway. Anno builds the spectacle first, Operation Yashima with the whole country's power grid funneled into one positron shot at Ramiel, Unit-01 going feral and tearing into Zeruel with its teeth, and then he turns the camera inward until the show is just crayon-drawn train seats and a boy being asked why he wants to be praised. The craft is in the silences: sixty seconds of Asuka and Rei standing in an elevator saying nothing, the held cuts on ceiling stains, Ode to Joy scoring a synchronized dance against Israfel. Then Episode 24 hands Shinji the first person who ever says he's worth loving, and he crushes him in a hand for three unbroken minutes. Yes, 25 and 26 collapse into folding chairs and congratulations, and half the people who start this drop it there. The other half never fully leave that apartment with Misato's beer cans and the penguin in the fridge.
SYNOPSIS
Massive alien entities called Angels descend on Tokyo, threatening human extinction. Humanity's only defense comes from the Evangelion: colossal biomechanical weapons that only teenagers can pilot. Shinji Ikari gets conscripted into this war despite his desperate desire to escape. He joins two other pilots his age, all mysteriously born after the first Angel invasion fourteen years prior. What begins as straightforward combat sci-fi rapidly spirals into something darker. Piloting the Evangelion demands an excruciating physical and psychological toll. Each battle extracts a price that standard mecha shows never examine. Shinji drowns in loneliness, self-doubt, and the crushing weight of humanity's survival depending on him. Around him, the organization supposedly protecting Earth grows increasingly unstable and sinister. The series gradually abandons traditional storytelling to burrow deeper into its characters' fractured psyches. Reality itself becomes uncertain. Nothing feels safe, not even the narrative structure itself. This isn't comfort viewing. It's a show that builds toward something genuinely unsettling, transforming robot action into a meditation on trauma, connection, and what survival actually costs.
