Anime Like Sangokushi II: Amakakeru Otoko-tachi
It drops you back into the same one-night-only format that made the 1985 special feel like an event: a single feature-length block on NTV, no season to stretch into, every beat of Romance of the Three Kingdoms compressed until it has to hit. The title translates to "The Men Who Soar Through the Heavens," and that is exactly the register these specials play in, warlords rendered as legends rather than historical footnotes. Purists will clock immediately that this is not Yokoyama's manga on screen, despite the credit. The faces, the designs, the whole storytelling approach were rebuilt from scratch, which is why the 1991 TV series exists as the faithful version. Watch it as what it is, an 80s TV-special auteur pass at the most adapted story in East Asia, made before anyone decided there was a correct way to do it. If you only know Three Kingdoms anime from the polished later stuff, this is the rougher, stranger ancestor.
